IRB Agreement with Nationwide Children's Hospital for Investigator-Initiated Research
What Types of Research are Covered?
The Ohio State University has entered into an IRB authorization agreement with Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In an attempt to facilitate collaboration and to avoid duplicate submissions, the institutions will, in some cases, rely on each other’s Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) for review and continuing oversight of non-exempt human subject research conducted by OSU faculty, staff, and students.
What Types of Research are Excluded?
Each institution will continue to make separate determinations regarding applications for exempt human subject research.
This agreement does not extend to industry sponsored and industry initiated clinical trials. When OSU faculty members conduct these types of studies, they must be reviewed by the Western Institutional Review Board. This agreement also excludes studies involving planned emergency research, gene transfer, xenotransplantation, or embryonic stem cell research.
Where Should IRB Materials be Submitted?
When OSU faculty, staff, or students serve as investigators on an investigator-initiated research study, the location of the study activities will usually determine which IRB will conduct the review.
