Research Responsibilities and Compliance

Institutional Biosafety Committee

An Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is required at all institutions that receive funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research involving recombinant DNA molecules. Regardless of funding source, all recombinant DNA research at The Ohio State University must be conducted in accordance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules and must be registered with the IBC.

The university IBC is further charged with reviewing and approving research conducted with microorganisms pathogenic to humans, plants, or animals. This review is conducted pursuant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/NIH publication; Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 6th Edition.

The IBC in conjunction with Environmental Health and Safety will also provide guidance to the Ohio State research community regarding the proper acquisition, handling, transfer, and disposal of potentially hazardous or regulated biological materials. The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) will also provide assistance with IBC registrations and applications.
