Interactions with USDA
Annual Report
The annual report to the USDA is prepared by the Director of University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR). After being signed by the chair of the Institutional Laboratory Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and the Institutional Official it is sent on to the USDA. This report contains the following elements:
- assurance that the institution is adhering to the standards and regulations under the Animal Welfare Act,
- any exceptions to the act with accompanying documentation justifying and outlining these exceptions,
- location of all facilities housing animals used for research, testing or teaching,
- species and numbers of animals involved in research, testing or teaching and involve no pain or distress,
- species and numbers of animals involved in research, testing or teaching and involve pain or distress with accompanying use of appropriate anesthetic, analgesics or tranquilizers,
- species and numbers of animals involved in research, testing or teaching and involve pain or distress which is unrelieved
Copies of this report are kept at the Animal Review Desk and within the offices of the University Laboratory Animal Resources Center.
Inspection Reports
Inspection reports received after routine USDA inspections, are forwarded to the chair of the IACUC and the Director of ULAR. A timetable for correction of any noted deficiencies is established and forwarded to the inspection officer.
