IACUC Required Clarifications, Modifications, and Revisions to Animal Use Protocols
After evaluation by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), an Animal Use Protocol (AUP) is specified to have one of four outcomes: “Approved”; “Requires Further Information”; “Deferred (major modifications are required and the AUP must be re-evaluated by the IACUC after the modifications are made)”; or “Disapproved.”
When an AUP is determined to “require further information” or is “deferred” a Notice of IACUC Review is forwarded to the Principle Investigator (PI) by the IACUC staff. The Notice of IACUC Review details all actions and clarifications required of the PI to continue the IACUC review process.
Deferred Animal Use Protocols
In the event that an AUP has been deferred, the PI should submit a revised AUP and a signed copy of the Notice of IACUC Review to the IACUC office within two convened meetings of the IACUC following the meeting at which the AUP was originally deferred. If the revised AUP is received by the IACUC office within the specified time, the revisions will be forwarded for evaluation at the next scheduled convened IACUC meeting. If the revised AUP has not been received by the IACUC office within the specified time, the AUP will be withdrawn from review and a new AUP submission will be required.
Animal Use Protocols Requiring Further Information
In the event that an AUP requires further information, the PI should submit clarifications and a signed copy of the Notice of IACUC Review to the IACUC office within two weeks of the date of the Notice of IACUC Review. The PI should be careful to address each item in the Notice of IACUC Review, as any items left unaddressed will require additional contact from the IACUC staff and can delay the IACUC review process.
All clarifications or modifications provided by a PI are forwarded by the IACUC staff to the appropriate IACUC reviewer(s). Action on clarifications or modifications will be taken by the selected reviewer(s) acting in concert with the IACUC Chair. In instances when only completion of administrative requirements (completed housing request, completed chemical hygiene plan, or approval by the Institutional Biosafety Committee) are needed, the IACUC Chair will coordinate final approval.
