Joni Barnard

Joni Barnard, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), directs the development of educational outreach initiatives to support faculty, staff and students conducting human subjects research in the social and behavioral sciences. She is also a member of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Institutional Review Board (IRB). Dr. Barnard earned her doctoral degree from The Ohio State University in Workforce Development and Education. Prior to joining the Office of Responsible Research Practices staff, Dr. Barnard was an Assistant Professor in Human Resource Development at Pittsburg State University where she taught courses in organization and workforce development, adult learning, and leadership.

Melinda Bruns

Melinda Bruns, Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA), who serves as a Quality Improvement Specialist and is a liaison between the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR), and Ohio State research community to promote ethical research practices and ensure protocol performance. Prior to joining the Office of Responsible Research Practices, Melinda had developed and led the Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) program at the University of Cincinnati. She is also a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, a Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist (RLATG) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, and earned her Bachelors of Biological Sciences from University of Cincinnati. Her diverse background in animal care, both clinical and research experience, allows her to identify educational needs, assist investigators, and foster a positive environment to achieve compliance with regulations, guidelines, and accreditation requirements at Ohio State.

Tish Denlinger assists researchers with their submissions, participates in educational outreach efforts, and supports the operations of the Biomedical Sciences Institutional Review Board. Prior to joining the Office of Responsible Research Practices, she served as a regulatory coordinator for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Michael Donovan, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), assists researchers with their submissions, participates in educational outreach efforts, and supports the operations of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Institutional Review Board. Michael earned his Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics and his Masters of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University.

Susan Ebert

Susan Ebert, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP) is responsible for implementation of electronic submission solutions to the Ohio State IRB. She also assists investigators with their submissions and serves as the institutional liaison with the Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB). Susan serves as a member of the Cancer and Biomedical Sciences IRBs. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Dietetics from the University of Cincinnati and her Masters of Science in Clinical Nutrition from Ohio State. Prior to joining the ORRP, Susan served in multiple oncology research positions at Prologue Research International, Northwestern University and at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Karen Hale

Karen Hale is the Director of the Office of Responsible Research Practices. She is also serving as the director of Ohio State’s e-IRB initiative, providing leadership for the development of content, review procedures, and education for online human subjects research protocols and for all functional and regulatory aspects of e-IRB. Nationally, Karen is a consultant for the Subcommittee on Harmonization of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She serves a consultant for the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) and is a site visitor for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP). Karen has also worked as Associate Director of the Office of Responsible Research Practices, and in The Ohio State University Medical Center Department of Pharmacy. She served as Vice-Chair of the Ohio State Biomedical Sciences Institutional Review Board from 1992-2002. Karen received her BS from the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State and her MPH from Ohio State’s College of Public Health. She is also a Certified IRB Professional (CIP).

Kellie Hall

Kellie Hall assists researchers with their submissions, participates in educational outreach efforts, and supports the operations of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Institutional Review Board. Kellie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from The Ohio State University and her Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of Dayton.

Liz Hanawalt, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), develops and manages web content and application forms for the human research protection program. Liz provides administrative support for a range of initiatives that support the human research protection program and the Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) operations. Prior to joining ORRP in 2004, Liz was a data analyst for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Liz earned a Bachelors of Arts in Biology from Rutgers University, and a Masters of Public Health from The Ohio State University.

Amelia Hargrove

Amelia Hargrove assists researchers with their submissions, participates in educational outreach efforts, and supports the operations of the Biomedical Sciences Institutional Review Board. Amelia earned her Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience with a minor in Clinical Psychology from The Ohio State University. During her time as a student, she assisted the IACUC support staff, and worked in both human subjects and animal research labs.

Todd Lash, a Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA), is a Quality Improvement Specialist responsible for monitoring protocol activities and ensuring institutional compliance of the animal care and use program. He also participates in educational outreach efforts and supports the operations for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Todd received his Master of Arts degree in Hearing Science from Ohio State and worked for more than 14 years in animal research laboratories before his employment with the ORRP.

Adam McClintock, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), provides leadership to the staff and students responsible for assisting researchers with their submissions and supporting the Behavioral, Social Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and the Cancer Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). Previously, Adam supported the operations of the Biomedical Sciences and Cancer IRBs and the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Adam received a Bachelors of Science in Psychology from The Ohio State University.

Sandra Meadows, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), supports quality improvement activities related to regulations and monitoring for the human research protections program. Previously Sandra served as the administrative manager for the Biomedical Sciences IRB. Before joining the ORRP staff, she coordinated obstetrical research for the NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network at The Ohio State University. Sandra earned her Bachelors of Science in Biology from Morehead State University and her Masters of Public Health from The Ohio State University.

Helen O’Meara, Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA), provides leadership for the staff team supporting the Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) and the Institutional Biosafety Committees. Helen previously served as the IACUC Quality Improvement Specialist. Prior to her Ohio State employment, Helen worked in commercial animal research laboratories directing toxicology studies. Helen received her Masters of Science in Environmental Health Science from Case Western Reserve University and has also been certified as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science.

Ellen Patricia

Ellen Patricia, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), provides leadership to the staff supporting the quality improvement activities in the university’s Human Research Protections Program. Ellen directs the post approval monitoring program that educates research teams on Ohio State University human research protection program policies and best practices. Prior to joining the Office of Responsible Research Practices, Ellen was the Director of Protocol Compliance at the James Cancer Hospital and in the remote past was employed by Pharmacia and Upjohn as a medical research associate. Ellen earned her Masters of Science in Human Physiology from The Ohio State University.

Cheri Pettey

Cheri Pettey, a Certified IRB Professional (CIP), assists researchers in determining the human subjects research review requirements for their projects, determines whether research proposals involving human subjects meet the criteria for an exemption from IRB review, and supports quality improvement activities for the human research protections program. She also participates in educational outreach activities, including the development of educational programming and instructional materials that help researchers navigate human subjects research review requirements. Previously, Cheri provided administrative support to the Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board. Prior to joining ORRP, Cheri was an instructor at Northern Illinois University. Cheri earned a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy and a Masters of Arts in English from Northern Illinois University; she also holds a paralegal certificate from Capital University Law School.
